Abstract

Fiji is becoming the 'host' to climate change 'refugees' thus the importance of the development of context-relevant curriculums to suit the 21st century students in Fiji; those that need to prepare for the survival of their communities in this modern era. The Fiji Islands is a developing multicultural nation in the South Pacific with education with as a major vehicle for development and an important driver in promoting peace and addressing environmental challenges such as a climate change and natural disasters. Despite the strategic focus on enhancing education in Fiji, underperformance and premature dropouts appeared to be undermining this strategic focus, so stakeholders constantly questioned the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. Also, with the rapid waves of globalization sweeping through the world, many socio-environmental problems like climate change affect and threaten the livelihood of people and communities in more ways than one.
