Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine family narratives as a definition of family identity in a new culture, by exploring the influence of an indigenous culture on the family stories and identity of South African immigrants in New Zealand. A mixed method is used to provide an analytical framework for a narrative inquiry, and these Euro-Western methodologies are decolonized by incorporating elements and principles of indigenous theory. The author interviewed nine first- and second-generation immigrants.
