Abstract
In the whakapapa of church and colonisation, nineteen ninety three was the quincentennial year of the signing of the papal bull ‘Inter Caetera’ that authorised the killing, enslavement and dispossession of Indigenous People in so called ‘terra nullius’ by Pope Alexander VI, then head of the English Church. In that year members of Te Haahi Mihingare o Te Tai Tokerau met with representatives of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland at the Māngere Marae Church in Manukau to whakatika or correct the errors of the 1857 Constitution of the Anglican Church in New Zealand, by implementing the 1992 Revised Constitution of the Church. Unlike other Amorangi in Te Pīhopatanga o Aotearoa, Te Haahi Mihingare o Te Tai Tokerau did not insist on a divestment of resources commensurate with the divestment of responsibility for mission that they had been given in the revised constitution, but they trustingly agreed to continue meeting in ongoing partnership with the Diocese to support their mission and to share resources. This kaupapa is a critical analysis of the constitutional partnership between Te Haahi Mihingare o Te Tai Tokerau and the Anglican Diocese of Auckland from the beginnings of Te Haahi Mihingare in 1814 through to thirty years after the 1992 Revised Constitution of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.
